Spend the afternoon, exploring the pretty town of Portovenere.
Due to its strategic position in the Gulf of Poets (named
after well-known poets such as Byron and Shelly who were
inspired by the charm of the area), the Genoese made the
town a land fortress prepared for enemy attack at any time.
This is why the houses in Portovenere form a wall along
the shore, and why the streets are so narrow: they could
be closed off within seconds and bolted shut. Walls were
built with three mighty towers and a majestic castle to
guard the village. The castle still exists and often hosts
important exhibitions.
From
Portovenere, excursion boats cross the 400m channel to the
Palmaria Island that offers beaches, cliffs,
natural vegetation and grottoes and Stone Age dwellings.
From here, you can admire the smaller Tino
and Tinetto Islands.
The
Cinque Terre National Park is just a few
miles away from Portovenere, spend your free time walking
and exploring the picturesque fishing villages and sample
the delicious cuisine and local wines.
Walking,
sailing, scuba-diving and horse riding are just a few of
the many activities you can find in the area, but if you
want something more relaxing take the boat to the glamorous
Portofino for shopping and a coffee in
the Piazza.
