| Meaning
not only superb but also noble, proud and even haughty,
Genoa is a city that can only be fully valued by a personalised
itinerary - Enchanting Liguria has created this fabulous
short break to suit the independent traveller, giving freedom
and flexibility to discover the secrets of this magnificent
city.
Known as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, the regions
capital has a rumbustious maritime history, with its port
remaining the biggest in the Mediterranean. Genoa lays claim
to the largest mediaeval old town in Europe, where artists
studios, churches and splendid palaces, stand side by side
in a labyrinth of alleys and small squares.
Day 1
Arrive independently in Genoa (private
transfer from airport/ station can be arranged on request).
Check in to your 4* hotel located in the heart of the old
quarter and enjoy a welcome drink. In the afternoon, you
will meet your professional guide for a tour of the city
- including Columbus House, Piazza De Ferrari,
the beautifully restored San Lorenzo Cathedral,
the old prison of Palazzo San Giorgio and
Palazzo Ducale.
In the evening, relax at a selected local restaurant for
a sumptuous, traditional Ligurian meal and a chance to taste
D.O.C wines.

Alternatively, walk around the Carruggi (alleyways)
and snack on freshly made focaccia, pizza, homemade gelato
and of course real Italian espresso. Enjoy the colourful
sights and smells of the food market and meet the locals
doing their daily shopping. Wander around the re-developed
Porto Antico and explore the Aquarium,
the largest in Europe; take a boat trip around the harbour
or visit the world famous Portofino resort
in the Riviera.
For dinner, we can recommend restaurants/ trattorias offering
Ligurian specialities.

Genoa
occupies a spectacular hillside site, accessed by vertical
lifts and funicular railways, leading to the impressive
17th century walls and fortifications.
Thanks to the golden age in the 17th century, the city today
is a fascinating mix of galleries and luxurious palaces,
filled with opulent furniture, tapestries and fine paintings
by Rubens, Van Dyck and Caravaggio.
As European Capital of Culture 2004, the city has undergone
a dramatic facelift revealing baroque facades, gothic churches,
sculptures and art works by famous artists. The refined
Ligurian cuisine and its outstanding and renowned wines,
combined with the beauty of the Riviera and the hospitality
of the Genoese people, makes Genoa a highly recommended
destination for the cultural and culinary traveller.

Day
2
Free day to spend as you wish.
Use your museum pass to discover Genoa's hidden palaces,
such as Palazzo Reale with its famous hall
of mirrors, the furniture and well preserved frescoes of
the Palazzo del Principe built for Admiral
Andrea Doria, the stunning collection of art in the Palazzo
Rosso and Palazzo Bianco and the
elegant courtyard of Palazzo Tursi in the
magnificent 16th century Via Garibaldi,
